Shanghai residents show off their wealth by hanging luxury brand paper bags to receive Covid-19 test kits at their door.

Quarantined at home for weeks, many Shanghai residents have found a new way to display their wealth by hanging paper bags from luxury brands outside their doors.

According to the SCMP, the upper class in Shanghai is flaunting their wealth and status with paper bags from luxury brands such as Burberry, Prada, Louis Vuitton, and Chanel hung outside their doors. This phenomenon appeared in early April when Shanghai conducted mass testing. Healthcare workers asked people to turn the bags outside their homes to prevent human contact to receive the testing kit.

“The sophisticated lifestyle of Shanghai residents is once again proven: running out to buy coffee when the temporary lockdown is lifted, lining up for Covid-19 testing with glasses of red wine, and now receiving testing kits with luxury shopping bags,” commented one netizen.

According to the Shanghai Health Commission, the city recorded 18,495 Covid-19 cases on April 20, a slight decrease compared to the previous days. From March 1 to April 20, the city of over 26 million people recorded over 496,000 Covid-19 cases, with 23,973 people hospitalized and 25 deaths.

Shanghai has been under strict indefinite lockdown since March 28 to cope with the largest outbreak of the past two years, causing problems and grievances among the people. Many people have difficulty accessing food, medical care, and some have even died due to being unable to access timely medical services.
