The paper packaging industry needs to focus on sustainable development
The paper and packaging industry has made a breakthrough, with an average growth rate of about 15% in the past four years. With the increasing demand for paper packaging domestically and the potential for exports, the paper packaging industry has become an attractive “playground,” attracting large FDI companies and domestic businesses.
Potential and Challenges of green development
According to statistics from the Vietnam Pulp and Paper Association (VPPA), domestic paper packaging consumption is estimated at 4.2 million tons, with exports reaching 0.8 million tons in 2019. In the past three years, Vietnam’s paper exports have achieved an impressive growth rate of over 200% per year. In addition, free trade agreements such as the Vietnam-EU (EVFTA) and the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP) are expected to bring great export opportunities for Vietnam’s paper and packaging industry.

The potential is enormous, but the domestic paper industry faces challenges in improving modern production technology, saving energy and water, reducing chemical use, complying with environmental regulations, and aiming for sustainable development. Currently, there are about 300 paper and packaging production companies in Vietnam. Still, most are low-capacity, limited technology, and are not closely linked to investment in reducing negative environmental impacts. Along with the potential for significant exports, the demand for paper food packaging domestically is also increasing enormously due to the shift towards green consumption trends. According to VPPA’s predictions, in the next 5-10 years, the demand for paper packaging is expected to grow by 14-18% per year.
Until the end of 2019, only CP Paper Company was the first enterprise to achieve LEED certification for their office and factory in the paper production industry. This year, Vietnam’s first aseptic paper box manufacturing plant, Tetra Pak Binh Duong, was awarded LEED Gold Certificate – Version 4, the latest version with the strictest standards managed by the US Green Building Council.
Efforts to promote sustainable development in the industry
As one of the largest paper factories in Vietnam, Tetra Pak Binh Duong produces about 12 billion paper boxes per year and can expand to 20 billion paper boxes per year.
Industry experts expect that leading companies like Tetra Pak will contribute to spreading a culture of sustainable development to the business community so that in the coming years, the number of green buildings in the paper industry will continue to increase. One of the initiatives the district has highly valued is the company’s partnership with other leading food, beverage, and packaging companies to establish the Vietnam Packaging Recycling Alliance (PRO) to promote the collection and recycling of packaging materials. The company also aims to collect and recycle all packaging materials that Tetra Pak brings into Vietnam by 2030.
